Mehran Kamrava, Director of CIRS, took part in a conference on the “Internationalization of Universities” at the University of Tehran’s Faculty of Social Science, held on January 30, 2016. Kamrava examined the reasons why university’s internationalize, and focused on factors such as the globalization of knowledge, campus synergies, search for new markets for students, and financial considerations. There are currently several different models according to which universities seek to internationalize, including the establishment of “Global Centers” (Columbia University), having overseas branch campuses (Georgetown, Northwestern, Cornell, Texas A&M, Virginia Commonwealth, and Carnegie Mellon Universities), entering into international partnerships with other universities (Yale University and the National University of Singapore), or offering specialized programs and degrees aboard. Kamrava concluded his remarks by offering some suggestions on ways and means Iranian universities can deepen their international engagements in the future.
