CIRS Scholars Participate in MESA 2019
CIRS participates in the 2019 annual Middle East Studies Association (MESA) Conference held in New Orleans, November 14–17, 2019. In addition to having a booth for CIRS publications at the book bazaar, Suzi Mirgani (Managing Editor of CIRS) and Zahra Babar (Associate Director of CIRS) presented papers at MESA panel discussions, and Mehran Kamrava (Director of CIRS) Chaired a panel discussion.

Filmmaking and the Arts as Civil Society in the Gulf Cooperation CouncilSuzi Mirgani, Managing Editor at the Center for International and Regional Studies, Georgetown University in Qatar, presented a paper at the 2019 Middle East Studies Association (MESA) annual meeting. Participating in the “Shall We Go to the Cinema?” panel, Mirgani’s paper examined some of the locally produced films and artworks that are overt or covert political statements about everyday life in the Gulf states.
The Golden Ticket: Pakistani Migrants in the Persian GulfZahra Babar, Associate Director for Research at Center for International and Regional Studies, Georgetown University in Qatar, presented a paper at the 2019 Middle East Studies Association (MESA) annual meeting. Participating in the “Migrants and Refugees I” panel, Babar’s paper examined how Pakistani workers navigate the frequently challenging Persian Gulf monarchies’ migration process.
