CIRS Fellow Mohamed Zayani Receives Book Prize

CIRS Research Fellow Mohamed Zayani‘s book on cyber activism has been awarded the 2016 Toyin Falola Africa Book Award, which is conferred by the Association of Global South Studies (AGSS) to recognize the best book on Africa.

Zayani’s Book is titled Networked Publics and Digital Contention: The Politics of Everyday Life in Tunisia (Oxford University Press, 2015), and is part of the Oxford Studies in Digital Politics Series.

This is the second International award Networked Publics and Digital Contention reaped. Earlier this year, the book won the Global Communication and Social Change Best Book Award from the International Communication Association (ICA).

Manuel Castells, Wallis Annenberg Chair of Communication Technology and Society, at the University of Southern California, described Zayani’s book as “one of the best analyses of the social movements that led to the transformation of the Arab world, and a major contribution to the understanding of social movements of the digital age.”

Networked Publics and Digital Contention is the first of three book projects on Media and ICT in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region that are supported by Georgetown University’s Center for International and Regional Studies (CIRS).

Professor Zayani’s newly released book Bullets and Bulletins: Media and Politics in the Wake of the Arab Uprisings (with Suzi Mirgani) was also published by Oxford University Press. He is currently completing a collaborative book project titled The Digital Middle East: State and Society in the Digital Age.
